THE DAY CENTER
We defy the street as a destiny
Usually, a child grows up in his family, at school, in a club, in his neighbourhood and with his peers, as places of containment, learning and relating. But this model, that seems “normal and just” to us, is not the one all children are living. There are other childhoods, outside these logics. It is about those childhoods that we care. Because getting born in poverty and living in the street shouldn’t be unremovable destinies.
C.H.I.C.O.S. is a program designed for children and teenagers, who, as a result of different circumstances, live or work in the streets of Rosario. Every year, some 250 - 350 children aged between 12 and 18 years old come to our Day center - Mendoza 1247 -. They are working children who contribute to the subsistence of their families with whom they live, and also children who live in the street, who develop their existence in this dangerous and imprevisible context.
We can define the Day center as a place of containment and possibilities. It is the place where our activities take place: recreational and artistic workshops as well as professional training. Through the activities, the children discover their potential, learn to create other sorts of relationships, and can imagine themselves in a different way. Besides, the Day center provides them every day with breakfast, lunch and a snack, and it is a place where they can come to whenever they feel the need to do so.
